Police officer shot in the mouth during Inanda protests

An eThekwini Metro Police officer was shot in the mouth following political protests that erupted in Durban’s Inanda area in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said that the police officer had been shot and wounded during protests in Amaote in Inanda.

He said the situation had since calmed down but that police were still monitoring the situation.

The protesters were allegedly unhappy at the way the Electoral Commission of South Africa handled the election in the ward.

“They were not happy with the result,” said Zwane, who said that it was understood that the protesters were supporters of an independent candidate in the area.

During the recent local government elections on August 3, there were 57 independent candidates who stood in eThekwini alone. Most of them were candidates, who had originally been members of the ruling African National Congress.

Of the 57 candidates, only four managed to secure wards that had previously been held by the ANC.

Comment could not immediately be obtained from eThekwini Metro Police spokesman Superintendent Sibonelo Mchunu.
