On Monday, 9 November 2020, former police officer Constable Sithembiso Innocent Nhleko (31), was convicted of the murder of another police officer and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Durban High Court.
This sentencing stems from the killing of police officer Sergeant Melusi Thokoza Sibisi at the Ekhombe Police Community Service Centre on 24 May 2019 where the accused, Constable Nhleko shot the deceased in cold blood after a dispute.
In the matter which investigated by the Hawks Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation, allegedly the deceased (Sergeant Sibisi) who was the commander at the Community Service Centre on that fateful day, was informed by Constable Nhleko that he was off sick for the day.
Nhleko was however allegedly seen drinking at the police barracks later on that day. Nhleko noticed Sergeant Sibisi who appeared to have been trying to capture pictures or video footage of Nhleko drinking yet he reported off sick.
The accused became angry and went back to his home to fetch his service pistol. Upon his return to the Community Service Centre, Nhleko opened fire on Sergeant Sibisi.
The now ex constable Sibisi is sentenced for life imprisonment with aggravating circumstances for murder of a police official.
