Police nab three suspected hijackers and recover stolen vehicle
Cops nab three suspected hijackers in KwaZulu Natal

On Sunday night, July 3, 2016 at about 23:00, Umlazi K9 unit were conducting crime prevention duties in and around Umlazi area when they received information about an alleged hijacked Toyota Hilux at A section, Umlazi.

The members started to look for the hijacked vehicle and it was spotted along Spinal Road at Bhekithemba area, Umlazi.

It is alleged that when the suspects noticed that they were chased by the police, they started to shoot towards the members and the members retaliated by firing back.

The suspects abandoned the hijacked vehicle along South Spinal Road and fled on foot towards the nearby bushes.

Police gave chase and with the help of police dog, three suspects were arrested in the bushes. Two of them were taken to hospital for treatment under police guard and the vehicle was recovered.

It is alleged that the other group managed to escape and the police are still searching for them.

The arrested suspects aged between 19 and 34 years will be charged for possession of suspected stolen vehicle and also for hijacking. They will appear in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court soon.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa praised the members of Umlazi K9 unit for their alertness that led to the arrest of the suspects. “Community members need to be involved in the fight against crime by provinding information about the whereabouts of hijackers,” he said.
