On the night of 4 September 2019, at 21:30, police officers from the Inanda Task Team were conducting crime prevention duties at Umzinyathi when they spotted a young man walking under the streetlight. When the man detected the police vehicle, he opened fire on police and attempted to flee the scene.

A shootout ensued and the suspect was injured on his right thigh and arm. An unlicensed 9mm pistol with ten rounds of ammunition were found in his possession. While the police officers were still busy at the scene, they were informed that the suspect had robbed someone of cash prior to being spotted by police.

The victim of the robbery arrived at the scene and positively identified the suspect.

The man (27) was charged for attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as robbery. The suspect is in hospital under police guard and will appear at the Ntuzuma Magistrates Court soon.
