In a pre-dawn operation on Sunday morning, police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested a 42-year-old suspect in KwaNongoma for possession of four unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The arrest followed a tip-off received by the Zululand District Task Team and Crime Intelligence about an individual in the Gwabe area allegedly in possession of illegal firearms. After verifying the information, law enforcement officers raided the suspect’s home in the early hours of Sunday.

Upon searching the premises, police discovered a cache of firearms hidden under the mattress where the suspect had been sleeping. The recovered weapons included a scoped 303 rifle, an AK-47 assault rifle, an Uzzi, and a 9mm pistol. The suspect failed to produce valid licenses for any of the firearms.

He was immediately arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The suspect is expected to appear before the Nongoma Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 18 August 2025.
