An Isuzu bakkie that was been pursued from Tugela, KZN last night, 14 July 2018, was recovered abandoned in Mdalasini in Everest Heights, Verulam.

The occupants of the vehicle were being pursued by a private security company based in Tugela and Ismail Mitha from Big Show Towing after they had shot and killed an Impala. The bakkie sped off after security officers approached the poachers. A high speed chase ensued and several attempts were made to stop the bakkie without success. During the chase the bakkie collided into two vehicles to avoid being stopped. Two Indian males were seated at the back of the vehicle during the pursuit.

At approximately 00:25 Reaction Unit South Africa received a call from Mitha requesting assistance to locate the bakkie which was heading in the direction of Verulam. Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search of Hazelmere and Redcliffe without success.

This morning RUSA received a call from a member of public reporting a bakkie matching the description abandoned at the informal settlement in Everest Heights.

Reaction Officers proceeded to the area and found the vehicle abandoned on an unpaved road. The buck that had been shot by the poachers was found behind the vehicle. A spent rifle cartridge was also recovered at the scene.

The owner of the bakkie was contacted and claimed that his vehicle was stolen during the course of last night and he only discovered the theft this morning. He was at the Verulam SAPS registering a case of theft of motor vehicle when the vehicle was recovered.

Police are investigating further.
