The Mountain Rise police made a breakthrough in a fraud case on 19 January 2018 when two women appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court.
Shameem Joosub (65), and her daughter, Fathima Joosub (29), both from Sandton in the Gauteng province are facing about 35 counts of fraud, which allegedly spreads across Cape Town, Phoenix, Alberton, Douglasdale, Sandton and Pietermaritzburg.
Allegations against the Joosubs are that they would secure client bookings via Ayka International Travels for pilgrimage to Sai Baba Center in India.
When the clients arrive at the airport, they would be informed that the tickets were not fully paid and would not be able to embark on their journey. The suspects started to scam the unsuspecting victims of their money since January 2017.
When the clients tried to contact them, they would not take any calls. Emails to them were allegedly responded with empty promises to the clients.
They were remanded in custody until 22 March 2018 for further investigation. In the meantime, investigations are ongoing.
