Phoenix hijacking ends in tragedy as motorist is shot and killed

A 34-year old man was shot and killed in a Phoenix hijacking last night.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said one of the company’s off duty armed response officer and his wife, who live in the neighbourhood, had rushed to the scene of the shooting to assist the victim.

Mathios said the hijackers were waiting in another hijacked vehicle for their victim to arrive at around 10.30pm. “The man was driving home from work and dropping off a colleague at his home in Phoenix, when a suspect armed with a firearm held him up and demanded his car keys,” Mathios said. “A scuffle broke out and the suspects fired five shots at the driver of the car, critically wounding him. The suspects fled in the victim’s vehicle.”

Mathios said an off-duty armed response officer who heard the gunshots went to the scene to assist the victim. “Our officer found the critically injured man bleeding and noticing the severity of his wounds, bundled him into their private car and took him to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Unfortunately, the victim was declared dead on arrival despite their efforts to save his life.”

SAPS Kwamashu recovered the hijackers’ vehicle, a red Toyota Conquest at the scene. “Police are investigating a case of murder,” Mathios said.

In another shooting incident, a Westville resident was lucky to survive after being hit twice when gunmen opened fire on him recently.
