Three men aged between 27 and 38 are in police custody in the Durban Central SAPS. These men are facing charges of armed robbery, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of firearm. They will appear at the Durban Magistrates Court soon.

It is alleged that on the afternoon of 3 November 2020, a couple was standing outside the gate of their premises on Peter Mokaba Road in Overport when they were accosted by unknown gunmen who demanded their cellphones. They then took the cellphones and fled in their getaway vehicle. A case of armed robbery was opened at the Berea police station for investigation.

Police officers from the Durban Central Field Unit received information about a vehicle at St Georges in the Durban CBD, fitting the description of the suspects’ getaway vehicle and proceeded to the area. On arrival, they found three men inside a shop who were trying to sell the two cell phones that were robbed from the victims.

The suspects were immediately arrested. The cellphones were recovered and their getaway vehicle was seized for further investigation. While police were searching the vehicle, a firearm with ammunition was recovered.
