Opportunistic Ballito Thief Busted by Alert Blue Response Officer

Swift action by a Blue Security reaction officer resulted in the successful arrest of a suspect in Ballito on Monday morning.

“The incident occurred when the officer responded to an alert of a trespasser who had stolen items out of a vehicle parked inside a property,” said Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios. “The suspect gained access to the yard by jumping over the front gate. Two jackets were then removed from the vehicle before he fled on foot,” Mathios said. “As soon as the officer received a description of the suspect he set off in search of the man,” Mathios said.

“A short while later the officer spotted him while patrolling on Zen Drive. At the time of his arrest the suspect was also in possession of pepper spray and a screwdriver,” Mathios said. Umhlali SAPS attended the scene of the crime and took the suspect into custody for processing.

Although we are all striving to do our best during #lockdown, remember that criminals are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to strike. Here are some tips to remember:

  • Ensure that the boundaries of your home are secure;
  • Check with your security provider that all systems are operational;
  • Never be complacent at home. Keep gates and doors locked;
  • Do not leave valuables in easily-accessible places at home;
  • Keep the exterior of the property well-lit at night or install motion-activated lighting to deter after-dark intruders;
  • Make contact with neighbours via social media and check up on them regularly;
  • Report any suspicious activity in the area immediately to the neighbourhood watch, security provider or local SAPS station.
