A multi-disciplinary operation including police officers from Task Force was conducted on the morning of 6 May 2020, at Obhokweni Reserve in Mahlabathini. Police entered into a homestead where a group of males were found inside a dwelling.

On arrival, the men attempted to flee on foot. Three brothers aged between 24 and 40 were arrested. Police found three firearms in their possession and ammunition. Firearms had serial numbers filed off. Three licensed firearms were also seized for further investigation.

The suspects were charged for possession of firearm and ammunition. They are expected to appear in the Mahlabathini Magistrates Court.

The operation emanates from inter-group conflicts in the area and the death of a chieftain (61) last month. The deceased was driving his vehicle at Obhokweni when multiple gunshots were fired towards him. He lost control of the vehicle and was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

Police are still investigating a case of murder. The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the death of the chieftain and other pending cases.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula applauded the arrest of the suspects.
