On 15 October 2018, at 12:00, police officers were conducting crime prevention patrols along Mangosuthu Highway in Umlazi when they spotted a vehicle with three occupants traveling at a high speed. The vehicle was intercepted and pulled over by police.

Two suspects managed to flee the scene on foot whilst the third was arrested by police. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and 35 rounds of ammunition.

Preliminary investigations conducted at the scene revealed that the vehicle was stolen from Newlands West on 8 September 2018. It is alleged that the victim parked his vehicle at Hillgrove in Newlands West when it was stolen. A case of theft of motor vehicle was opened for investigation at Newlands East SAPS.

The 27 year old suspect will be appearing at the Umlazi Magistrates Court today on charges of possession of suspected stolen property as well as possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has praised the police officers for their vigilance which has led to the arrest of this notorious criminal as well as the recovery of a stolen car and an illegal firearm.

“I have requested the Cluster Commander to convey my thanks and appreciation to these police officers as another criminal has been taken out of circulation. This arrest is very noteworthy as detectives believe that the suspect may be linked to three murders which occurred at Umlazi recently,” he said.
