The community of Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal is living in terror after a suspected serial rapist, arrested just yesterday, managed to escape police custody. Residents say the suspect has been terrorizing the area for years, with many now afraid to leave their homes.
Suspect Arrested, Then Escapes
According to police reports, the 28-year-old suspect was arrested by the Marian Hill police in connection with multiple rape cases in the area, which includes Nkandla. However, he escaped late Monday evening after complaining of an asthma attack while in custody.
“The community was relieved when he was arrested, but now that he’s escaped, the fear is worse than before,” said a local ward councillor, who noted that some learners have already requested transfer letters due to safety concerns.
Years of Terror
The suspect has allegedly been linked to rape cases dating back at least five years, with reports suggesting an escalation in attacks since his arrival in the area. Residents claim that the lack of a fully functional satellite police station has worsened the situation, forcing them to travel nearly an hour to report crimes.
Police Launch Manhunt
Authorities have launched a massive search operation but have not yet confirmed whether additional police will be deployed to the area. The community remains on high alert, particularly due to concerns over the safety of schoolchildren, as some victims were reportedly scholars from nearby areas.
As the manhunt continues, Nkandla residents are pleading for increased security and swift justice to end the reign of terror that has gripped their community.
