It is alleged that on 24 May 2022 at 13:00, a group of armed men carrying bags entered the business premises situated on Allen Street in Newcastle and forced everyone that was in the shop to lie on the floor.

At gunpoint, they took multiple cellphones, laptops, airtime, batteries, cash and other gadgets to the value of R2 million.

They loaded the items in their bags before fleeing the scene. A case of business robbery was opened for investigation at Newcastle SAPS.

On the same day at 20:00, an intelligence operation was conducted by various role players in the SAPS and the private security officials. The information led the team to Madadeni where two cellphones, cellphone pouch, gas gun, wallet and clothes that were worn by one of the suspects were recovered.

A 56-year-old woman was placed under arrest for possession of stolen property. The suspect is appearing before the Madadeni Magistrates’ Court.

On 25 May 2022, the team proceeded to Gauteng where they were following information about the robbery suspects who were in hiding. The team went to a house on Dewberry Braamfischer where a 39-year-old male was found at the premises. He was found in possession of a vehicle that was used in the commission of crime. He was then placed under arrest.

Police descended to Commissioner Street in Gauteng where a 42-year-old male was found and arrested at the premises. He was found in possession of R17 500-00 cash, and two cellphones that were taken during the robbery.

The third suspect aged 38 was arrested in one of the flats at Lower Ross. The three suspects will appear before the Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 30 May 2022 on charges of business robbery.
