Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal — A murder suspect wanted in connection with the killing of a 22-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday after Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers uncovered his hiding place — only for two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers to become trapped for nearly an hour by an armed, stone-throwing mob that attempted to seize the accused.
Aerial Hunt Precedes Bedroom Arrest
Members of RUSA received a tip that the suspect was concealed within dense bushland in the Ndwedwe area. A drone was immediately deployed, and its pilot carried out an extensive aerial sweep of the terrain. Despite the thorough search from above, the suspect could not be located.
Reaction Officers then shifted tactics, beginning to question residents, relatives and associates in an effort to track down the wanted man. Through these interviews, investigators learned the suspect had taken shelter at a relative’s home.
Officers moved to the property and conducted a search. After roughly two hours, they discovered the suspect hiding beneath a bed inside a bedroom. He was restrained on the spot, and SAPS members were called to the scene to take formal custody.
Handover Turns Volatile
The initial transfer of the suspect to SAPS occurred without incident. However, a large crowd quickly gathered at the location, demanding that the accused be handed over to them. Several individuals openly threatened to attack the officers if they attempted to remove the suspect from the area.
Tensions boiled over once the suspect was placed inside a SAPS vehicle. Members of the crowd began pelting the police vehicle with stones and blocked the driveway using concrete blocks and steel drums. Armed individuals surrounded the scene and threatened to set the state vehicle on fire. The two SAPS officers and their prisoner found themselves trapped inside the vehicle for approximately one hour.
Helicopter Support Secures Escape Route
RUSA officers were immediately redeployed to the remote location, and a RUSA helicopter was dispatched to provide air support. The aircrew maintained aerial surveillance throughout the incident, relaying real-time intelligence to ground teams regarding the crowd’s movements and activities.
Backup officers arrived and secured the perimeter as the crowd continued to protest around the immobilized SAPS vehicle. Reaction Officers then worked to remove the concrete blocks and steel drums obstructing the roadway, clearing an escape route.
The trapped policemen and the murder suspect were ultimately escorted to safety without any further incident.
