Shrewd investigations by Detective Sergeant Sibongiseni Ngcobo has condemned convicted murderer Khayelihle Nzimande to twelve (12) years imprisonment after he was found guilty for the murder of Simukelo Zondi.

The 28-year-old Nzimande was sentenced in the Pinetown Regional Court on 8 December 2022.

In October 2019, 24-year-old Zondi who was a student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) at the time, was reported missing, only for his burnt body to be found lying next to the rugby field at the UKZN in Westville.

With the assistance of fellow students and security officers, Nzimande was arrested few days later and was duly charged for the murder.

In pursuit of justice, Detective Sergeant Ngcobo exhausted all available avenues to prove the case beyond any reasonable doubts and to bring closure to the family and friends of the victim.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has applauded D/Sgt Ngcobo for effectively applying all investigating techniques to positively link the suspect with that callous crime that attracted media attention globally.
