Verulam Regional Court convicted and sentenced Menzi Jack Mtsholweni (25) to life imprisonment for murder and 45 years for robbery.
In May 2016, Mtsholweni and his roommate, known as Dickies robbed and killed Neren Harridus (40). Neren was found with a stab wound to the neck in Edmunds Burry Street, Belvedere and his cellphone was missing. A case of murder was opened at Tongaat police station for investigation.
Three weeks later after the incident, Dickies (28) was found dead with multiple stab wounds and his belongings were also missing in Belvedere area. A case of murder was also opened at Tongaat police station for investigation. Mtsholweni was arrested and linked to both murders.
Extensive police investigation revealed that Mtsholweni and Dickies were fighting over Neren’s cell phone when the accused fatally stabbed him and robbed him of his belongings. The accused was kept in custody throughout the trial. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for each murder and 45 years for two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the detective for solving the cases and sending the accused in jail indefinitely.
