Mother shot dead and children held at gunpoint in Cornubia

First Responders removed a one-year-old boy and a sixteen-year-old girl from their home after gunmen shot dead their mother while she undressed in the bathroom.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received the call for assistance from a neighbour who heard two gunshots.

Controllers on Duty were despatched Paramedics & Reaction Officers to the location in Ward 102 in Cornubia – KZN.

Upon arrival, Officers interviewed a female child who had found her mother in the bathroom bleeding from gunshot wounds to her head.

Reaction Officers entered the home and found the woman lying face up in a groundfloor bathroom.

Paramedics declared her deceased at 16:04.

The woman suffered an entry/exit wound to her eye/head.

When the elderly child was interviewed, she informed a female Reaction Officer that she returned home from school and was passed the door key through the window because her mother was entering the bathroom. She then opened the door and two unknown men entered the home with her.

Both produced firearms and one suspect escorted her and her one-year-old brother upstairs. She was asked not to speak or alert her mother. The second suspect remained downstairs. A short while later she heard two gunshots and the men left immediately.

The child ran downstairs and found her mother bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound to the head.
