More than 80 arrested in KZN police operations

The Northern KwaZulu-Natal stock theft unit has arrested more than 80 people for various crimes including stealing cattle, goats and sheep, police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “The stock theft unit members arrested more than 80 suspects during operation which started on 13 November 2016 until 25 November”.

Gwala added: “Nineteen suspects were arrested for stock theft in the Nquthu, Newcastle, Ladysmith, Greytown, Dannhauser, Msinga, Dundee, Glencoe and surrounding areas”. During the operation the members recovered 65 cattle, 96 goats and 35 sheep.

Police said the unit also arrested another 68 suspects for murder, possession of unlicensed firearm, possession of dagga, failing to brand animals, possession of stolen property.

Gwala said police found “478 grams of dagga, a 9mm pistol with three live rounds of ammunition, an AK 47 with 30 live rounds ammunition and a flat screen plasma TV”.

All the suspects have appeared before various magistrate’s courts in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
