Mobile office burnt at University of Zululand

A prefabricated mobile office at the University of Zululand in northern KwaZulu-Natal was gutted by fire on Wednesday night.

The mobile office at the university’s main campus in KwaDlangezwa near Empangeni was being used by the universities’ in-house security department.

University spokeswoman Gcina Nhleko was not immediately available for comment and the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

A student speaking on condition of anonymity blamed politically active students, who were unhappy with recent developments at the campus, for the fire that destroyed the mobile office.

Staff have been on strike since 15 August after wage talks between university management and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union collapsed.
