Mob justice: Vehicle theft suspects stoned, vehicle set alight, Waterloo

Two men are in a serious condition after they were assaulted and their getaway vehicle was burnt by an angry mob in Waterloo, Verulam on Saturday morning, 17 November 2018.

At approximately 04:22 members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by the public. Upon arrival at the housing complex Reaction Officers found a Toyota Tazz engulfed in flames. Two men were being beaten with knobkerries, stones and boulders by a crowd who accused them of attempting to steal a vehicle from the complex.

According to one resident the vehicle entered the complex during the early parts of the morning and dropped off two people who were seen tampering with a vehicle. The community which consisted of several hundred people mobilized and blocked exits leading out of the complex.

They managed to stop the Toyota Tazz and began assaulting the two occupants before they set the vehicle alight. The driver allegedly admitted to being part of a vehicle theft syndicate from Berea in Durban.

Police arrived at the scene and the injured men were transported to hospital.
