At 08:42 on Wednesday morning, 15 January 2020, Netcare 911 responded to reports of a shooting on George Sewpersadh Street in Verulam North of Durban.

Reports from the scene indicate that an adult male sustained a single gunshot wound to his head while walking to Verulam court. Reaction Unit, South Africa (RUSA) were dispatched to the scene after receiving multiple calls from the public reporting the shooting.

On arrival, the victim, Yousuf Ahmed Deedat, was found lying face down on the pavement. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to his head.

According to witnesses, Deedat was walking towards the court when he was approached by an Indian male who drew a firearm and shot him once before fleeing the vicinity on foot. A Security Officer who witnessed the incident pursued the suspect who got into an awaiting white Mazda car on Groom Street and sped off.

Deedat is a well-known activist who was expected to defend himself in a case scheduled at the Verulam Family Court.

Medics assessed the scene and found that the patient had sustained critical injuries and required Advanced Life Support intervention to stabilise him.

Due to the nature of the patient’s injuries the Netcare 5 specialised helicopter ambulance was activated via Reaction Unit South Africa to airlift the patient to a specialist facility for the treatment.

Circumstances leading up to the shooting will be investigated by the relevant authorities.
