An unknown man has been shot dead during a hijacking in Tongaat, KwaZulu-Natal on Friday evening 19 June 2020. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was called out to the scene on Lilypond Avenue after residents heard a gunshot followed by a vehicle speeding off from the same vicinity.

Reaction Officers arrived on scene at approx 19:55 and found the Tongaat SAPS in attendance. A male was found in a ditch and was declared deceased.

A female on the scene explained that she had exchanged contact numbers with the deceased two days ago in the Durban CBD. He called her a short while prior to the incident and requested to visit her. She provided her residential address and upon his arrival, she approached his vehicle when armed suspects accosted the man. She fled when one of the suspects pointed a firearm at the drivers head. She then heard a gunshot go off.

The woman could not immediately provide any details of the suspects and did not know the name of the victim. When interviewed by Reaction Officers, she could not provide details of the vehicle taken in the hijacking.
According to a witness, the vehicle taken was a black BMW with an Eastern Cape (EC) registration. This could not be confirmed.
