Man shot dead by security at Durban sports club

A man was shot dead after he and accomplices attacked a security guard at a Durban sports club in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police spokesman Lt-Col Thulani Zwane said the unknown man was shot by the security guard after the guard was attacked with stones and an iron rod at the Berea Rover Sports Club in Jacko Jackson Drive near the Kings Park rugby stadium. The guard had been responding to an alarm when he allegedly came under attack.

Marshall Security spokesman Kyle van Reenen said that shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, “while responding to an alarm activation of a business premises in Jaco Jackson Road, in the Stamford Hill area of Durban, one of our armed reaction officers came under attack from a number of armed suspects”.

The suspects attacked the officer as he was attempting to leave the premises, hitting him several times on his head with a large rock. In fear for his life and in an attempt to defend himself the officer discharged his firearm, hitting one of the suspects. The remaining suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction, he said.

Additional resources were dispatched to the scene, including the assistance of Netcare 911. The suspect was found to have suffered a fatal gunshot wound and was declared dead by paramedics. An extensive search was conducted for the remaining suspects involved, but they remained at large.

“Our armed reaction officer sustained injury and was stabilised on [the] scene using intermediate life support intervention, before being taken by an ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care.

“On further investigation, it was ascertained that on exiting the property, the armed reaction officer encountered difficulty closing the driveway security gate and exited his vehicle to inspect the gate when he came under attack. Closer investigation by authorities later revealed the gate had been tampered with. A wire was found to have been used to force the gate to remain open and possibly lure the officer from his vehicle,” Van Reenen said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said that by the time paramedics arrived at the scene the man had succumbed to his wounds and was declared dead. Zwane said an inquest docket had been opened at the Durban Central police station.
