Man severely assaulted during Merebank hijacking

Motorists are warned to be alert whilst traveling on the off-ramp between South Coast Road and Himalayas Road, Merebank, following an armed hijacking yesterday evening.

The driver was accosted at the robot (traffic lights) by an unknown number of suspects with firearms. The suspects attacked him whilst he was in his car and was then dragged out of his vehicle and beaten.

The driver reported that there was a white Ford Courier bakkie (pick-up truck) infront of him that stalled at the robots and remained in position until the robot turned red twice. Suddenly out of nowhere three suspects surrounded his vehicle and one suspect smashed the complainant’s driver side window.

They attempted to push him to the rear of the vehicle, however, he fought the suspects off.

The suspects then tried to throw the victim over the bridge onto the railway tracks but he fought them off. In their haste to get away, the suspects let go of the victim and drove off in his white Toyota Corolla. The driver was badly assaulted and sustained extensive injuries to his face.

The public is urged to be on the lookout for a white Toyota Corolla 1.6, 1999 model, ND 603801, with 3 Hyundai wheel caps. If spotted, call 072-159-8583.

It is unknown if the stalled bakkie was part of the hijacking ploy but Alpha Alarms urges drivers to be vigilant and drive to the nearest police station if you suspect hijackers are following you.
