In a successful prosecution by Pongola Regional Court, a 26-year-old relative was convicted and sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment for raping his 9 yea -old niece at Empangeni area, Pongola.
The victim was raped between 2012 and 2015.
The teacher noticed that her school performance was deteriorating and questioned her.
She opened up to her about the abuse and the teacher reported the matter to her guardian as well as the police. A case of rape was opened at Pongola police station and transferred to Ulundi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for investigation.
The accused was immediately arrested and taken to court where he was successfully prosecuted to serve 30 years in prison.
