Empangeni Regional Court convicted and sentenced Sphelele Mthethwa (20) to 25 years imprisonment for crimes he committed at Nhlwathi area.

In October 2016, a nine year old boy was on his way home when he was grabbed by Mthethwa who forced him to a nearby forest. The victim was raped, repeatedly stabbed and left for dead. He was found seriously injured and was taken to hospital for medical attention.

A case of attempted murder and rape was opened at KwaMbonambi police station for investigation.

Preliminary police investigation led to the swift arrest of the accused who was charged and taken to court for prosecution. He remained in custody throughout the trial until his successful conviction.

“Abuse of minors will always be dealt with up most importance in our province to ensure that criminals refrain from sexual related violence and other horrendous crimes. We will continue to send rapists in jail where they belong,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
