The Ladysmith Regional Court recently sentenced Siphesihle Sphe Khumalo aged 24 to a lengthy term of imprisonment for his role in hijacking and robbing of a truck driver.

On 19 June 2012 at 02:00, a 42-year-old truck driver parked his truck overnight at the lower-end of King Street, Ladysmith. He fell asleep inside the truck but was later woken up by the sound of a window being smashed. A number of suspects armed with firearms and knives threatened and assaulted him. They drove off with the truck and the driver still inside. The suspects abandoned the truck with the driver in Newcastle, fleeing with the driver’s personal belongings. The driver reported his ordeal to police in Newcastle where the case was transferred to the Uthukela Task Team for investigation.

Subsequently, the accused was arrested in Umbulwane, Ladysmith after forensic evidence linked him to the crime scene. During his arrest, he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm. On 12 April 2017, Khumalo was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for the hijacking and robbery plus eight years imprisonment for the possession of the unlicensed firearm. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
