Hawks members arrested Siyabonga Shabalala (21) for murder of an off-duty policeman Mthokozisi Phakathi (34) who was stationed at Mpumalanga Police Station.
On 17 May 2016, Phakathi was shot two times by the suspect. He was taken to the local clinic where he succumbed due to his injuries.
A case of murder was opened at Mpumalanga Police Station and the docket was transferred to the Hawks.
An intensive investigation was conducted and Shabalala was arrested on Friday, 20 May 2016. He appeared in the Hammarsdale Magistrate’s Court today, 23 May 2016. The case was postponed to 30 May 2016 for bail application.
