The Durban Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 50 year old man to life imprisonment for raping his granddaughter. He was convicted after he pleaded guilty to rape on 20 December 2018.
On 23 February 2018 at 17:45, the victim (6) was in the house at Silvertree road, Wentworth when she was approached by her grandfather. She was repeatedly raped by the accused and her stepfather who was sleeping in another room heard the noise and became suspicious. He went out to investigate and saw the accused raping the victim.
The accused ran away after he noticed that he has been seen. Community members were mobilised and the police were also notified. They started to search for the accused in the area and he was later arrested on the same day. He was charged for rape and taken to court where he appeared several times until he was sentenced.
