Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to Coniston near King Shaka International Airport at approximately 14:14 on 17 July 2018, by a Metro Police Officer after he noticed an Indian male slumped in a grey Toyota Hilux bakkie parked alongside the road.

Upon noticing that the driver was bleeding the Metro Police Officer requested the assistance of RUSA Medics. Medics assessed the man and found that he had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head and declared him deceased.

Reaction Officers interviewed several truckers who operate at a mining site on the same road and they had informed Officers that they had seen the bakkie parked on the road side at approximately 13:15. They noticed the deceased slumped in the driver’s seat and they assumed that he was asleep. Further information has been received and cannot be made available to the public at this stage.

Reaction Officers traced the registration of the vehicle in an attempt to identify the deceased.

The information lead Officers to a home in Unit 17 – Phoenix and the identity of the victim was confirmed to be 24 year old Ashil Premchun. His younger brother informed Reaction Officers that the victim had left home at approximately 12:00 and had R10 000 in cash in his possession to purchase a bull bar from Verulam for his bakkie.

According to the brother their father was killed in a hit and run in Umhlanga, KZN a few months ago. The siblings lived alone and worked at a family business in Phoenix.

Permission was granted by the family to use the picture of the deceased.
