Malema in Newcastle court for Riotous Assemblies charges

African News Agency (ANA)

The Newcastle Magistrate’s Court was on Monday morning packed to capacity ahead of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema’s appearance on charges of violating the apartheid era Riotous Assemblies Act of 1956.

Malema faces two charges in relation to breaching the Act by urging EFF supporters to invade land.

ENCA reported that Malema told supporters in Newcastle that whites could not claim ownership of any land because it belonged to blacks.

Prior to Malema’s arrival there was a group of about 400 EFF supporters who sang and danced outside the court room, watch by police and hundreds of bystanders.

When Malema’s arrived at the court, he dressed in a suit and tie. The EFF leader was accompanied by senior leader of his party, including his deputy Floyd Shivambu and national spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

Malema cracked jokes with the media as he awaited the start of proceedings.
