On 28 July 2017 the Pongola Regional Court convicted and sentenced Bhekuyise Magagula, 26, to life imprisonment for murder, 30 years (2 x 15 years) for robbery with aggravating circumstances and 10 years for attempted murder.
This sentence stems from an incident that occurred at Magudu area, a year ago. Magagula hired a hitman to kill his former girlfriend and her boyfriend.
The couple was at Magudu area, Pongola when an unknown gunman accosted them. He robbed them of their valuables and fired several shots.
Thabiso Masuku, 27, was fatally wounded and his girlfriend, 25, sustained critical injuries. She was taken to hospital where she was treated for a while. A case was opened and an investigation commenced. Magagula was immediately arrested, charged, taken to court where he was tried for murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.
The hitman is still sought.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the investigating officer for sending a thorough investigated docket to court which led to a successful prosecution of the accused.
