Eshowe Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 25 year old man to life imprisonment for raping his mentally handicapped cousin. The sentence was handed down on 4 March 2019 after the magistrate heard how he raped a 33 year old man at Gingindlovu area last year.

On New Year’s Day, last year at 4.00 in the morning, a 33 year old mentally challenged man was in the house at Mhlababo area, Gingindlovu sleeping, when he was approached by the suspect who allegedly raped him. The two brothers of the victim who came from New Year’s Day celebrations, noticed that the door of a rondavel where their brother was sleeping was not properly closed and they became suspicious.

They went inside and caught the suspect and the victim half naked. The case of rape was opened at Gingindlovu police station after the suspect confessed that he raped his cousin. The docket was transferred to Eshowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation. The suspect was handed over to the police and he was charged with rape.
