On 17 August 2018, Nqutu Regional Court convicted and sentenced Nhlanhla Xaba (23) to life imprisonment for rape and 15 years imprisonment for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

It is alleged that on 4 April 2016 at 03:30, a 58 year old victim was in her place of residence at Mondlo area when two known males gained entrance by breaking her bedroom door and demanded money. The victim told them she had no money. The accused threatened the victim with the knife fortunately, she managed to grab the knife. The accused assaulted the victim with a stick and they dragged her to the back of the house where she was raped.

Charges of rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were opened in Mondlo SAPS and the docket was transferred to Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

The swift action by the investigators led to the immediate arrest of the accused. The accused made several court appearances until he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and 15 years for assault. The second suspect is still at large.
