The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for economic development will on Wednesday visit the Sodwana Bay Guesthouse and has vowed to take “firm action” against its “racist owner”, André Slade.

“We are going to take firm action against this guy and teach him a lesson, but it will be done within the parameters of the law,” said MEC Sihle Zikalala’s spokesperson Bheko Madlala.

On Thursday, an email from the guesthouse caused outrage online when Slade turned a prospective black client away, saying the establishment no longer accommodated “blacks or government employees”.

According to Madlala, the MEC will visit the guesthouse “to address racism complaints”.

Madlala said that he did not want to divulge whether Slade had received forewarning of the visit.

“We have heard the way he articulates himself on radio. We cannot allow a situation where one person contaminates the whole area, which is a prime tourist destination,” said Madlala.

He said the MEC would decide on a course of action after his visit. “We have many options on the table. There is no place for people like this in a democratic South Africa.”

During a press briefing on Tuesday, the African National Congress’s provincial secretary Super Zuma said the party was “deeply concerned” that KZN continued to dominate headlines with news of racism and racial intolerance.

“We need urgent and harsh actions against owners of this guesthouse. Our struggle for freedom was essentially a struggle against white supremacy and we cannot allow a reemergence of racism to define our national discourse,” he said.

During a telephonic interview with The Star last week, Slade said the establishment worked within God’s law, not the Constitution. He has also said that blacks were made to serve whites, were not people, and most recently added that homosexuality was from the Illuminati.
