The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has taken note the article by the Daily Maverick titled “Top cop implicated in corruption by Nxasana and Booysen appointed acting head of KZN Hawks Organised Crime Unit” by Marriane Thamm.

To put the record straight, Colonel Sthembiso Mhlongo was appointed to act as Provincial Commander, Serious Organised Crime, Kwazulu-Natal on 5 April 2019. At that stage, Major General Johan Booysen had not testified at the Commission of Enquiry into State Capture.

Major General Booysen commenced with his testimony on the 17 April 2019, whilst the former NPA National Director of Public Prosecutions Mzolisi Nxasana’s testimony started on 12 June 2019.

Colonel Mhlongo is the most senior Colonel in the DPCI province and he was appointed in the position after Brigadier Thembeka Dube retired from the post at the end of March this year.

The Daily Maverick did indeed send two media enquiries on the appointment of Colonel Mhlongo and were both responded to however, only one was published.

The allegations that were raised at the commission are now receiving the attention of the DPCI. The public must therefore rest assured that the matter is receiving the necessary attention.
