The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma remarked:-

“We are seeing results following the deployment of our energetic RTI team from Empangeni Region to the border and other routes used for cross border crime.”

“More than 27 100 cars have been stopped and searched. In particular, we targeted the border between KZN, Mozambique and Swaziland.”

“Many motorists have been arrested in Manguzi, Mbazwana, Jozini with a special operation executed in Thengani.”

“The figures from the 1st December for Empangeni Region, which covers road networks in Umkhanyakude, Zululand and King Cetshwayo are as follows:-

12 illegal immigrants arrested.
281 motorists arrested for drunk driving.
4118 motorists charged for a number of offence.
273 motorists without drivers licenses.
364 unlicensed vehicles.

Duma concluded: “RTI will continue to work with local traffic officers in various  municipalities, SAPS, SANDF and Home Affairs Immigration Units.”
