DURBAN, KWAZULU-NATAL — A severe KwaZulu-Natal strong winds warning has been activated as a cold weekend settles over South Africa. While most of the country is bracing for fine but chilly conditions, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) is urging extreme caution along the KZN coast and adjacent interior due to impending severe weather disruptions.
Yellow Level 2 Warning for Damaging Winds
The meteorological agency has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds across parts of KwaZulu-Natal. The alert, which was in effect from 4:00 am until midnight on Friday, was triggered by the passage of a cold front accompanied by a ridging high-pressure system.
This specific weather pattern is driving intense south-easterly to south-westerly winds through the coastal and interior regions. According to the latest forecasts, sustained wind speeds are expected to hover around 40 km/h. However, motorists and coastal residents should prepare for severe gusts that could peak at up to 80 km/h.
Maritime and Transport Hazards
The SAWS highlighted significant safety risks associated with the gale-force conditions, particularly for those on the water. Maritime activities face the highest threat, with the weather service warning that small vessels are at risk of taking on water or capsizing entirely. Consequently, operations at small harbours and local ports may experience temporary disruptions.
On land, the strong winds pose a direct threat to transport networks. Commuters are advised that fallen trees could block major travel routes. Furthermore, high-sided vehicles are urged to exercise extreme caution on exposed highways, high-level routes, and bridges, where dangerous crosswinds could easily compromise vehicle stability.
Saturday Weather Outlook
Looking ahead to Saturday, 25 July, the extended national forecast predicts a generally fine but cold to cool weekend across the country, though pockets of warmer weather will persist in select areas.
In KwaZulu-Natal specifically, the north-eastern regions will see a shift in conditions. These areas are expected to be partly cloudy, bringing isolated showers and rain to the interior.
