Members of the Directorate for Priority Crime investigation (Hawks) in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a public prosecutor who is alleged to have demanded money from a complainant.
Hawks spokesperson, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, said: “Hawks members of Serious Corruption Investigations arrested Mduduzi Funeka, 40, who is a public prosecutor at Ixopo Magistrate’s Court for corruption.”
Mhlongo said the Hawks had received information on Monday that Funeka had demanded money from a complainant in order not to charge him in a case of stock theft.
Police initiated an undercover operation which saw Funeka being “caught red-handed accepting cash”.
Funeka was arrested inside the court premises.
Mhlongo said Funeka appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Court on Tuesday and was granted bail of R1,000.
Funeka is expected to make his second appearance in January 2017.
