A Kloof resident sustained injuries when armed suspects confronted him during a home invasion early morning, 30 April 2019.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said two suspects gained entry into the resident’s home through the back fence. The incident occurred at around 7am.

“The two suspects entered the premises and approached the gardener, ordering him to keep quiet. The suspects then walked away towards the main house, but as they approached the house the gardener started shouting out to warn his employer,” Mathios said.

“When the resident heard his gardener shouting, he came outside to investigate and spotted one of the suspects on the balcony. He turned and ran back into the house to activate his panic button but the second suspect confronted him inside the house and he was not able to reach the panic button in time.”

“The suspects, who were armed with knives and a firearm – although it was not clear whether the weapon may have been a toy gun – held up the resident and told him to comply. They started ransacking the house and removing valuables including a laptop, digital camera and cellphone. A struggle broke out between the resident and the suspects and during the scuffle the resident sustained a knife injury to his head. The suspects fled over the back fence of the property and ran in the direction of Wyebank,” Mathios said.

Meditech paramedics arrived on scene and treated the injured man. SAPS Pinetown also attended the scene of the crime.

Mathios advised residents to educate domestic staff regarding the procedures to following during an emergency and to ensure homes are fitted with sufficient panic buttons at easy to access points. “With the high number of home robberies that take place across the city, it’s important for employers to educate their staff regarding security procedures. Make sure that they are empowered with the knowledge of what to do in an emergency. Ensure that they have a remote panic button while they are at work and that they also know where the panic buttons are around your home so that they can call for help should an incident occur,” he said.
