Umlazi Regional Court convicted and sentenced Samkelo Khumalo (33) to a total of 23 years imprisonment for rape, kidnapping and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He was sentenced on 15 January 2018 after the court heard how he raped the victim. He was sentenced to 15 years for rape, five years for kidnapping and three years for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

On Freedom Day, 27 April 2016 at night, the victim (31) was at H section informal settlement, Umlazi when she was approached by the accused. She was forced by the accused to his house where she was assaulted and raped.

A case of rape, kidnapping and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened at Umlazi police station.

Two days later, the Umlazi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit arrested the accused and he was linked to the rape case. He appeared in the Umlazi court until he was convicted.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the conviction handed down to the accused. “This will serve as a warning to those who terrorize women and children in our province. I further commended the unit for the speedily arrest of the accused,” he said.
