K9 unit sniffs out fleeing hijacker, Durban

A 35-year-old man is expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on 17 December 2020 facing carjacking charges. On Tuesday, 15 December 2020, at 13:00, the complainant was driving his vehicle along Trent Road in Berea when he was robbed of his vehicle by two unknown men. A case of carjacking was opened at Berea police station for further investigation.

The investigation was then conducted by police and the tracking team and the vehicle was spotted traveling along John Dory Drive in Newlands East. Upon seeing the police officers and the tracking team, the suspects abandoned the hijacked vehicle and fled on foot into the nearby bushes towards Quarry Heights.

The perimeter of quarry heights was cordoned off and a police task team together with K9 unit searched the bushes and arrested a suspect with the help of the canine. The suspect was taken and detained at Berea police station for further processing.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised the team for the recovery of the hijacked vehicle and the arrest of the suspect.
