During an Intelligence-driven operation on the morning of 18 December 2021, members from the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit recovered commercial explosives at an abandoned house in the Bruntville area in Mooi River.

These explosives have been confirmed to be Viper booster which are generally used in mining.

Although, not confirmed yet, it is suspected that these explosive may have been intended for Automated Teller Machine (ATM) bombings and/or Cash-in-Transit (CIT) heists as similar explosives are known to have been used for this purpose before.

These types of explosives have been recovered previously as well.

No arrests have yet been made with regards to explosives recovered today and we are appealing to anyone who has any information to please contact the SAPS on 086 00 10111.
