Strong teamwork between Blue Security armed response officers, the police and the community lead to three suspects being arrested and the recovery of stolen goods at the weekend.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said armed response officers had responded to a property in Hillcrest after residents reported that their dogs were barking in Fisher Road at 5.10am on Saturday morning.
“Everything appeared to be in order on the property but as the officers were leaving, a security guard from a neighbouring property told them he had seen two suspects running with a bicycle,” Mathios said. “They had tried to throw the bicycle over a fence as they fled the scene when our officers arrived in the neighbourhood. But in their haste to evade arrest they gave up and left the bicycle behind,” Mathios said.
Mathios said the Mongoose bicycle, which was fitted with a race number, was recovered and taken to back to the resident for identification but it did not belong to them. It was handed over to the Hillcrest SAPS.
Mathios said police arrested a suspect in Moorland Place in Moorton after two trespassers were spotted fence hopping in the neighbourhood in the early hours of Saturday morning. “One of the suspects managed to evade arrest but the second suspect fell and injured himself while jumping over a wall. A resident arrested him and handed over to the Chatsworth police at the scene,” Mathios said.
In a third incident at 10.50am on Saturday morning, an armed response officer arrested a shoplifter after he stole energy drinks and other items from a shop in King Dinizulu Road on the Berea. “The suspected stole the goods and fled on foot pursued by the shop’s security guard. One of our officers joined in the chase and helped the security guard arrest the suspect. He was handed over to the Umbilo SAPS at the scene,” Mathios said.
Mathios said police arrested a suspect in Effingham Road in Kenville after he allegedly stole clothes from a resident’s garage at around 1pm on Saturday.
Response by armed response officers, SAPS and community members have been very proactive, when 5 suspects were arrested across Durban within 24 hours of each other recently.
