‎Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive in Pietermaritzburg to lay a wreath at a train station in the KwaZulu-Natal capital on Saturday.

Modi was expected to board a train at Pentrich Station and make the same trip that Mahatma Gandhi did in 1893, before he was thrown off the train because he was not white.

A marked police presence was evident at the Pentrich Station ahead‎ of Modi’s expected arrival. A horde of photographers and journalists also awaited his arrival.

After laying a wreath at Pietermaritzburg Station, Modi will head to the Gandhi settlement in Phoenix outside Durban. He is also expected to attend a civic reception at the Durban City Hall, and meet KwaZulu-Natal premier Willies Mchunu and Zulu king Goodwill Zwelithini.

Modi will then depart for Tanzania on the next leg of his first tour of Africa. He was in Mozambique on Thursday and after his visit to Tanzania he will head to Kenya.
