Following recent reports regarding animals being poisoned, the Durban and Coast SPCA would like to caution all pet owners to be vigilant and protect themselves and their animals as much as possible.
Reports of poisoning have been received by the SPCA and SAPS in the following areas; Hillary, Seaview, Bellair, Yellowwood Park and Montclair, however the following advice should be followed by all pet owners:
• Be aware of unusual or suspicious substances or food in and around your property.
• Handle any suspicious material with gloves and ensure it is removed and inaccessible to your pets. (the poison rumoured to be used is very dangerous and can be absorbed through the skin)
• Keep your pets indoors at night, if possible.
• Report any suspicious substance or material found to your nearest police station as these incidents could be a precursor to further criminal activity such as house breaking, vehicle theft, etc.
• Be aware of changes in your pets behaviour, eating patterns, etc.
• Seek veterinary attention immediately if you suspect that your animals may have ingested poison.
It is suggested to train your dogs not to eat food other than that given to them in their bowls, however this can be very difficult. So please remain vigilant so that your animals will not fall prey to this awful crime.
