Illicit cigarette dealer arrested for bribery, Merebank

On Thursday, 22 March 2018, members of Ethekwini Inner South Cluster Operational Command Centre Task Team arrested a 27 year old suspect for possession of illicit cigarettes and bribery.

The O.C.C team led by Captain Lynyon Houston, received information of a business premises situated in Merebank where illegal cigarettes were being sold or stocked.

The officers acted swiftly on the information and proceeded to the shop. Cst Mcobothi entered the shop where a shop assistant offered him a packet of fake cigarettes. Csonstable Mcobothi identified himself and conducted a search were police seized fake cigarettes with an estimated street value of R 30 000, 00. The accused then offered a bribe to the police officers which the members refused.

Police immediately arrested the accused and informed him of the chargers against him. The accused will appear at the Wentworth Magistrates Court on Friday 23 March 2018.

Acting Cluster Commander of Ethekwini Inner South Cluster Major General Mandlenkosi Chirwa commends the team for their integrity which they displayed by refusing to accept this bribe. We will continue to uphold our mandate to serve and protect.

Police will continue to squeeze crime to zero and root out criminal activity.
