ULUNDI, KwaZulu-Natal — The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has officially pledged to fight municipal corruption, positioning the eradication of local graft and the promotion of ethical leadership as its primary focus for the 2026 Local Government Elections (LGE 2026).

Speaking at the party’s closing election rally in Ulundi, located in northern KwaZulu-Natal, IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa outlined a comprehensive strategy to clean up local government. He emphasized that the party will work tirelessly to wipe out corruption within municipalities, ensuring that local governance is rebuilt on a foundation of strict accountability.

A central pillar of the IFP’s municipal revival plan is the demand for competent councillors and professional administrators. Hlabisa stressed that the era of deploying unqualified individuals to local government must end. Instead, he argued that key administrative positions must be filled exclusively through merit-based processes, appointing individuals who possess the actual skills required to do the work.

Beyond administrative competence, the IFP is committing to a rigorous framework of ethical leadership and sound financial management. According to Hlabisa, true ethical leadership in practice means being fully answerable for decisions and prioritizing the community’s interests above all else. He made it clear that political connections and personal gains must never supersede the needs of the people.

Ultimately, the party leader reiterated that public funds must be strictly utilized to serve communities rather than advance political interests. By championing these reforms, the IFP aims to ensure that every cent of public money produces a tangible public benefit, reinforcing their commitment to transparent and accountable local governance as voters head to the polls for LGE 2026.
