Members of Provincial Vehicle Task Team, Durban K9 Unit, Durban Metro K9 Unit and other units embarked in an operation at Brighton Beach area.

The team spotted a suspicious blue Opel Astra with four occupants. The vehicle had no registration plates at the front. The members tried to intercept the vehicle but it sped off. The team managed to intercept the vehicle whilst attempting to flee. One of the suspects was tackled by the canine.

Upon searching the vehicle, two firearms were recovered and one of the firearm was taken during the house robbery on 22 February 2018 in the Amanzimtoti area.

The suspects were also linked to a house robbery and attempted murder committed at Athlone Park. It is alleged that two suspects armed with firearms entered the house, robbed the owner of a cell phone and shot him. The cellphone taken was also recovered from the suspects.

The preliminary investigation was conducted at the scene and it revealed that the recovered vehicle was taken during the house robbery at Sydenham area on 14 February 2018 at 21:20. One of the suspects is out on bail for a house robbery case committed in Scottburgh on 8 January 2018.

He was due to appear in court on 20 March 2018. The arrested suspects will be profiled to see if they are linked to other robberies committed in the Amanzimtoti and surrounding areas. The suspects aged between 19 and 31 will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on charges of possession of a stolen property, possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunitions and house robberies.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the team for apprehending the suspects who are terrorising the community. “The recovered firearms will be profiled to check if they are linked to other cases committed in the country,” he said.
